Google Drive is now official, offers 5GB of free cloud storage

After being rumored for the better part of the last year, Google officially just announced its own cloud storage solution – Drive.

Google Drive is now official, offers 5GB of free cloud storage

Google Drive gives you 5GB of storage the second you sign in to use the service. No questions asked. The interface is based on Google Docs and you can collaborate with other people on documents, spreadsheets and presentations. The sharing and collaboration system is enhanced by comments, which you get notified for if they are new.

If you’ve been using Dropbox, you’ll feel very at home with Google Drive. That’s because Google has borrowed an idea or two from the undisputed cloud storage leader, hoping to get to sit in its cozy throne some day. Drive comes with a desktop client for Windows and Mac OS X and in the form of a mobile app for Android. It seems though, iPhone and iPad users will have to wait a bit to get their Drive apps.

Once in Drive, you get a list of all your documents from Google Docs and your files from the designated folder on your computer. Those files get listed on the service’s mobile app as well.

Naturally, Google has used its immense search know-how in Drive. You can search your files by keyword, file type, owner and more. It can even recognize text in scanned documents using OCR (Optical Character Recognition) technology. It goes one step further by using image recognition technology on your photos. So if, for example, you’ve made a photo of the Colosseum in Rome and later search for “Colosseum”, your Drive photos of that place will appear as results.

If you find 5GB too limiting, Google gives you plenty of upgrade options for a monthly fee. You can choose between 25GB of cloud storage for $2.49/month, 100GB for $4.99/month or 1TB for $49.99 month. An added bonus is that if you choose an upgrade, your Gmail account storage also increases by 25GB of space. Check out Google’s introductory video to their brand new service.

Google has integrated Drive very tightly with its other services like Google+ and Gmail. The company says you’ll eventually be able to share stuff from your Drive in Google+ or attach it directly in Gmail.

Now it’ll be interesting to see how the competition from Dropbox, SugarSync, SkyDrive, Box.net and others respond to the Google challenge.

Samsung Galaxy 3 Phone official teaser is out

As expected, Samsung just launched their Next Galaxy teaser video. At the event on May 3 in London, Samsung is expected to unveil its highly anticipated Galaxy S II successor and, reportedly, a quad-core tablet. Enough with the chit-chat, here's the video itself.

We are yet to see if Samsung will succeed in converting more users to the Galaxy cause, but it's certain that the event will be the focus of everyone's attention. We are also interested to see if a certain Samsung competitor, which is currently in fierce legal battle with the Koreans, will provide some kind of response to the last part of the teaser video.

Samsung Galaxy 3 Photo 'dummy box' prototype surfaces

Samsung GT-I9300 'dummy box' prototype surfaces. We have another picture of what is likely to be the next Galaxy phone. As usual, the phone is camouflaged by being placed within a case but we still get a glimpse of some of the important bits.

Samsung GT-I9300 'dummy box' prototype surfaces
For starters, we see the arrangement of the buttons at the bottom of the display. For the first time, we are also seeing a Menu button there, along with the Back, Home and multitasking button. Samsung has changed the order of the keys again and placed it on the left unlike the Galaxy Nexus, which places it on the right. Also, unlike the Galaxy Nexus, the Menu button pushes the other three buttons on the right, so they are no longer in the center.

What's curious, though, is what we see below the display. There is a physical Home button, not unlike the ones we have seen on previous versions of the Galaxy smartphones. However, we did not see this when we first spotted this prototype device. If the phone is going to have on-screen controls then it makes no sense to have a physical Home button. Perhaps this is something that will eventually disappear by the time the phone reaches the production stage.

Another thing to note is the shape of the device. If you look closely, placed within the case, the corners of the base seem to be highly curved. If you remember the media invite image for the Mobile Unpacked 2012 image, you see two curved droplets of white and blue metallic substance.

If we put on our soothsayer hats for a minute, we can see the Galaxy S III being available in white and blue colored versions, with the blue model having a metallic finish, and both having highly curved corners. The curves will help the device fit your palm perfectly, which also goes with Samsung's tagline that says "For technology to be truly smart, shouldn't it fit into your life naturally?" with additional references to Galaxy fitting in your hands in the teaser video.

Anyway, we won't have to wait too long to find out how it really looks like, with the Samsung event being just a week away from today.

Apple violated one of four Motorola Mobility patent rights

Apple violated one of four Motorola Mobility patent rightsThe never-ending patent war in the mobile world wages on. This time it's Apple that may have found themselves in hot water after an ITC judge found the Cupertino-based company guilty of infringing on one of Motorola Mobility's patents.

Motorola is coming fresh from a preliminary win against Microsoft (in a suit about the Xbox), but both that and today's ruling need to be reviewed by a six-member commission before they come into effect.

Anyway, Motorola had slapped Apple with a suit for violating four of its patents, though the ITC judge found that Apple is only violating one of them. It's a patent on 3G that helps reduce noise in signals.

Apple feels that they're in the clear: "A court in Germany has already ruled that Apple did not infringe on this patent, so we believe we will have a very strong case on appeal".

The six-member commission will announce its decision on August 23 and if they decide in favor of Motorola, the company will be able to block imports of Apple gadgets in the US.

Meanwhile, both Apple and Microsoft have filed complaints against Motorola in Europe, claiming that Moto is using some patents, which are essential to the industry, which they are not supposed to do (RAND).

Apple announces Q2 2012 financial results

Apple has announced its financial results for the fiscal second quarter of 2012 that ended in March 31, 2012. Their total revenue for this quarter was $39.2 billion and the quarterly net profit was $11.6 billion. In comparison, the figures were $24.7 billion and $6.0 billion respectively for the same quarter last year.

Apple announces Q2 2012 financial results
As usual, the iPhone did very well this quarter, with Apple selling 35.1 million of those, up by 88 percent compared to year-ago quarter. Sales were down compared to the first quarter, however, where Apple managed to sell 37.04 million iPhones, the reason for this being chalked down to the holiday season that boosted the sales in the previous quarter.

As far as iPads are concerned, Apple sold 11.8 million of them, a 151 percent jump over the year-ago quarter but still down from the 15.43 million sold in the previous quarter. Apple also sold 4 million Macs (7 percent increase) and 7.7 million iPods (15 percent increase).

The current amount of cash in Apple’s bank account now stands at a staggering $110 billion, up by $12.4 billion since the last quarter.

Samsung Galaxy S3 photo leaks

It's time for today's "photo of the Samsung Galaxy S3" leak - these seem to occur more and more often as we come closer to May 3, when Samsung's Unpacked event will finally settle things one and for all.

The leaked photo in question (the one on the left) shows a device with a hardware home button with two capacitive keys on its sides (menu and back). You can see the volume rocker on the left and the power/lock key on the right - basically, the standard Samsung arrangement.

Note: the middle and right photos come from previous leaks.

The screen is off, so there's no way to tell if the device uses the on-screen buttons that we've seen in previous leaks. But it does look an awful lot like the sketch in the alleged leaked manual. And the bezel is very thin - as it would need to be with the rumored 4.6-4.8" screen.

Samsung Q1 2012 results are out, takes top spot from Nokia

Samsung announced its financial results for the first quarter of this year and the South Korean company is cheering. Analysts like Strategy Analytics say that it is now king of the mobile phone hill - ending Nokia's 14-year reign.

Samsung shipped 93.5 million phones in the three month period, while the former champ Nokia managed just 82.7 million. Of the shipped Samsung phones, 44.5 million were smartphones, which beats Apple's achievement of 35.1 million smartphones. This puts Samsung on top both in terms of both total phones shipped and in the number of smartphones.

Samsung Q1 2012 results are out, takes top spot from Nokia
Consolidated revenue went up 22% year on year to $39.9 billion, while consolidated net profit reached $4.4 billion.

The chip manufacturing business is down, but demand for DRAM chips and application processors (especially the cool new 32nm ones) is expected to bounce back up in Q2.

The Samsung profit drivers were really IT & Mobile communications business and the display business.

The mobile business is seeing strong demand for smart devices of the Galaxy line (like the Galaxy S II and Galaxy Note), with revenue from the mobile division increasing 86% year-on-year.

IT was again the strong demand for high-end TVs (LED and 3D) along with tablet and OLED panels that helped push operating profit of Samsung's Consumer Electronics business up a whopping 550% in the quarter (year-on-year) to $9.4 billion.

You can find out more details on Samsung's performance in Q1 from its press release or this earnings release PDF.

Samsung Galaxy S3 GT-I9300 service manual revealed

Assuming we are to believe everything we heard so far about the Galaxy S3, and especially the leak in the KIES system, which is as good as official, the model name for Samsung's next flagship will be the I9300.

So today there is this leak, which shows the Samsung GT-I9300 service manual, so it should be nothing else but the S3, right?

Well, yes, assuming the manual is legit in the first place. But since we only got here after so much assuming, we'll let you decide whether that sketch of a phone is the final design.

Samsung Galaxy S3 GT-I9300 service manual revealed
Regarding the specs, we are not that sure. Nothing there seems that much out of the ordinary, but the screen so far has only been rumored as a 4.6-incher and at 4.8 inches it's would be closer to the Note than to the regular phone lineup. For all we know, the whole leak could be bogus so take it with a pinch of salt. Anyway, we'll know the real specs come next week.

Nokia N9 to get PR1.3 update

Nokia N9 to get PR1.3 updateThe PR1.2 update for the MeeGo-running Nokia N9 came out a couple of months ago, but even before that Nokia had been teasing PR1.3, calling it a "small but valuable" update.

Someone from a MeeGo fanblog was eager to find out more details on the next update, so they contacted Nokia - and Nokia answered. Reportedly, a Nokia representative said that the update will be out by the end of May and confirmed that the update is small, but it would contain many surprises.

The Nokia representative couldn't comment on whether the Skype app for the N9 will support video calling, like the Google Talk Video Call app already does (Skype is a third-party app after all).

It goes without saying that this info should be treated as a rumor for now.

ZTE announces Q1 2012 results

As you may recall, ZTE made some bold statements earlier this week, most notably involving ambitions to start shipping some 100 million smartphones annually by 2015. This goal now seems slightly less realistic, after they fell short of their forecast results for the first quarter of the year.

ZTE announces Q1 2012 results
ZTE's biggest rival, crosstown manufacturer Huawei, reported a 53% decrease in its 2011 profits, despite a sales growth of only 11.7% and ZTE also noted similar trends.

Many analysts attribute these numbers to ongoing price wars between the two giants, as each strives to gain market share in China's competitive mobile economy.

Either way, ZTE is still slated to release a massive amount of devices in the coming years, if their MWC announcement extravaganza is any indication. We'll have to wait and see if they make you reach for your wallet anytime soon.

BlackBerry 10 developer Alpha device leaked

RIM is holding a BlackBerry Jam conference next month in Orlando where it is supposed to give out development devices running the upcoming BlackBerry 10 to ten of the developers attending the event. We are now seeing what are allegedly pictures of this developer device, courtesy of a CrackBerry forum member.

The phone looks like a shrunken down PlayBook, with the same matte plastic back that goes around the side and surrounds the display. The front has the earpiece and a camera at the top, the display in the middle and what seems like a (blurred out) logo at the bottom.

Of course, how this device looks like is irrelevant because it is only intended as a developer unit and won't make it to production. The final devices are likely to have a bit more flair although to be honest this doesn't look to shabby either.

Samsung Galaxy S3 Image Leaked

There is no doubt that the Samsung Galaxy S 3 is a highly expected smartphone, actually it’s probably the most expected device of 2012. A lot of leaked pics appeared lately, most claimed to be the real thing when actually all of them were obviously fake. This one is different from the others because it truly seems authentic. This time, the Samsung Galaxy S 3 appears to be unveiled on May 3rd, in a press invite.

The photo is not exactly what we wanted as it doesn’t show many details, though most press invites don’t reveal much anyway. The clear fact is that the design is very intriguing with lost of nice curves which give it a futuristic appearance. The image was exposed by the guys at Phandroid which means that there is a good chance that it could a real capture of the Samsung Galaxy S 3.
However, if I take my time in thinking about it, there are some aspects that just don’t fit in the equation. The first thing that makes me doubt the authenticity of the image is the fact that the presumed press invite on which the photo was taken took place so early (these kind of press invites never go out two months early). Another thing, if I look closely at the phone’s design, though I really like it and think it could be the next flagship of Samsung as the company is always trying to separate itself from its competitors and to make it different from the Galaxy S 2, it looks a little out there. If we look back in time, the leaked images with the Galaxy Nexus had the same curved appearance that was really extreme, and I think that this would be the same situation. Also, the gash on the side looks kinda weird which makes me believe that the phone could come with a stylus, which would be very odd and extremely disappointing.

But lets not be so skeptical because the leak is very mind blowing indeed. It’s very confusing as there are two possibilities: either this is in fact the real Samsung galaxy S 3 or someone took a lot of time imagining a smart plausible press invite photo. As for the unveil date, May 22nd was speculates more than once, thus it might be something about it.

Rumor has it that the new Samsung Galaxy s 3 will have a quad-core 1.5 Exynos processor, 1 GB of RAM, a 4.65-inch HD Super AMOLED display with 16:9 ratio,  a NFC chip, a highly advanced 12 MP camera with LED flash and 1080p video recording support and 4G LTE capabilities (where available). As for the out of the box OS, the Samsung Galaxy S 3 will come packed with Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich.

Gmail: disruption for millions of users

While the rumor swells around the launch of Google Drive (next week?), A cloud service from Google has been some disturbance Tuesday.

For nearly an hour around 19h, hosted Gmail users with a 500 error page when trying to connect. A 500 error is a sign of an internal server error.

The outage was felt worldwide and affected individuals and professionals who hold a Google Account.

Particularly with social networks, this problem does not pass unnoticed. Gmail has nearly 350 million users. The first minutes of the incident, Google has raised an impact for less than 2% of them prior to reassess its estimate to less than 10%. A small percentage but still some 35 million users.

Google has apologized for the inconvenience and ensure the reliability of its system remains a top priority. In 2010, Gmail's uptime was 99.984% and 99.99% in 2011. What perspective.

the percentage of users affected was estimated at less than 2% and less than 10%, not the other way as we noted earlier due to incorrect reading of the dashboard of the state of Google apps.

Samsung Galaxy S3 May be resistant to water

P2i is also looking to create a standard to which all manufacturers can adhere for making phones water resistant, which would make networks more likely to range the phones if they were to need fewer repairs.

"There is major interest from carriers in the US to discuss criteria to help against water ingestion for customers," said Eric Cohill, COO for P2i.

"We're working with major carriers to create a standard of performance [for water repellence] which can give OEMs something to work to when creating smartphones.
