Free Google Wi-Fi in New York

The Mountain View giant has installed Wi-Fi in a neighborhood south of New York. More than 100,000 residents will benefit free of Internet up to 10 Mbps.

In a burst of generosity, Google has offered Wi-Fi to residents of a neighborhood in New York. The network was launched on Tuesday during a press conference organized by the municipality of the city. In particular it covers the Chelsea neighborhood in Manhattan. This is also where we find the offices of Google.

"This area can now boast of being the first in Manhattan to have a Wi-Fi outside totally free", said Michael Bloomberg, the mayor of the city, hoping that New York will one day become "the global technology center."  In total, nearly 100,000 New Yorkers who benefit from Wi-Fi Internet free way for at least two years and at a rate between 5 and 10 Mbps.

A Stunt

In fact, Google is not the only finance the operation. He is the one who will hand over the pocket by paying $ 15,000 to build the infrastructure and $ 45,000 per year for maintenance, the rest will be paid by a local association to promote the development of the district. However, Google said it had no intention at the moment to extend the project to other areas.

This experiment is surely a promotional campaign for the group. Google has actually embark offers Internet access through fiber optics. The group is also currently being tested in Kansas City, where he already has a flow rate of 1 Gbps, which is 100 more than the other operators in the region. In this city, it has also offered free internet access with 5 Mbps rate. New York could be the second city network test Google.

Nokia Lumia and Nokia Asha sell better than expected

Nokia could go back in the race with its Lumia and Asha range which totaled 13.7 million sales in three months.

Since the advent of the smartphone, Nokia began its slow decline. He was the leader of mobile phones for 14 long years with the phones features (conventional phones), before being surpassed by Samsung in 2012.

However, the Finnish manufacturer has changed its strategy last October. It has launched its new range of smartphones Lumia and Asha range for emerging countries, both in Windows Phone. And provided preliminary results for the 4th quarter, this tactic would bear fruit.

Net sales division "Devices & Services" reached nearly 3.9 billion euros. Thus, the group has sold more than 86.3 million phones, including 13.7 million smartphones. Of these, Nokia has sold 9.3 million units and 4.4 million Asha Lumia. These results have exceeded the expectations of Nokia which therefore welcomes the good sales.

If we are still very far from the figures of Apple and Samsung, Nokia Windows Phones seem to meet with some success. According to Steve Ballmer, CEO of Microsoft would even these smartphones already out of stock in "some places around the world." But for the moment, Windows Phone only about 3.5% of market share in the world. It is still far from the 20% estimated by analysts in 2013.

Free Google Wi-Fi in Manhattan

Google is known for its innovative online services and more efficient for its Android-based devices and designed in partnership with leading global manufacturers, but we know less about the Mountain View company for its involvement in the United States in the deployment of Internet across the country.

One finds Google as an ISP in the United States where he gradually deploying a network of high-speed fiber. One of the latest examples for the cover of Kansas City via 1Gbps network. But Google did not stop there, because now offers access to Wi-Fi in the Chelsea neighborhood of New York.

The project in question is the result of a partnership between the public sector (the mayor of New York) and private (Google) for the implementation of this entirely free Wi-Fi as long as you have a Google Account, on the neighborhood of the zone defined below.

Both sides welcomed the progress that allows Chelsea to constitute itself as an attractive high-tech, and residents, students and tourists to enjoy a free quality.

For Google, this operation allows one hand to increase its visibility and popularity on the East Coast of the United States, but also Wi-Fi cover the district of New York is where their offices. This is already the case in the city of Mountain View, which hosts the headquarters of Google, which has a totally free Wi-Fi. Will there be the same in Paris, in the Opera district, near the French offices of Google? Nothing is less certain ...

Do not hesitate, if you make a detour to New York to take advantage of this service in the area rather charming Chelsea and tell us your experience.

VoIP Facebook Messenger: the VOIP coming!

Facebook Messenger is a very nice application for all those who spend their life on the famous social network and want to stay in touch with their community. Friendly, and you probably know that this is some time now that this nifty application integrates VoIP calls. Yes, but only our Canadian friends could enjoy far ... Fortunately, it just changed and this feature is now open to Americans. The best is yet to come because Facebook has decided to deploy progressively in all countries over the next few weeks ...

In other words, if all goes well, the VoIP calls should land somewhere among us in the coming months. And when this is done, then we will all have the opportunity to pass calls to our virtual friends, and without anything to pay. Just like Skype, so the video below.

Attention all de same as to take advantage of this feature, you will either find yourself near a WiFi or enjoy a package of type "data" . Most recent packages include this option, it is the case of all packages like unlimited, but it will still check ahead that you have what it takes. Also, note that it will be preferable to 3G (or 4G, for those who qualify) to enjoy this feature. Because, well, 2G, it might still pedaling in sauerkraut.

Speaking of which, you can also add that Facebook Messenger can now archive conversations with a simple sweep to the right side. Function was removed for a time but had to give Facebook the face of incredible pressure from its users.

After Samsung, Apple attacks Google Apps

Patents between Apple and Samsung, it's a long story. This war is not about to end. The firm at the apple has made a request to the California judge on adding several models and Samsung Apps.

The war between Apple and Samsung is very complex, it is even very difficult to navigate. In this umpteenth chapter, Apple has made a new request to the judge. The California court agreed Friday to add in its complaint several Samsung devices ( Galaxy Tab 2 and Galaxy S3) and the latest version of the Android OS, Jelly Bean. Apple had already attacked this OS, but the complaints were modified versions by Samsung. Today, the Cupertino company directly attacks in Mountain View. Korean has not remained unmoved in the extension of the list because it has decided to add to his complaint, the iPhone 5. Currently, the war between Apple and Google is not reported, but it could very well come in the coming days or weeks.

Another war Apple / Google?

In this trial, the two companies accused of having copied technologies and designs in violation of the intellectual property . In July, Samsung had lost a lawsuit in the U.S., however, the Korean decided to start a war against Apple. The trial is scheduled for 2014 and could be many surprises in the next two years. The addition of Android in the complaint is a surprise. The Google OS met with some success, a survey FIFG indicated that users were satisfied 95%, this rate is quite important.

Android market represent 75% of sales against 15% for Apple. Finally, Jelly Bean would be used only on 2.7% of terminals 1st November. But in just three years, the Mountain View company has gone from darkness to light with some domination. War could therefore soon take place between the two companies.

The next episode of the war between Apple and Samsung will occur on December 6. This hearing is the result of the first case. Samsung was ordered to pay a billion dollars to Apple, but the Korean did not want to stop there. We must therefore wait until the beginning of December to see the turn of events.

Google TV emulator now on Windows, Mac OS X and Linux

The Google TV struggling to unite, has only a catalog of applications  very thin. Things should change, because the development has been greatly facilitated.

The Google TV is not a new project at Google, since the first products were released in October 2010 with two major manufacturers: Logitech and Sony. Unfortunately face a high price, performance, halftone, the public has not answered this. It must be said that the platform used only for Intel processor family, where Android was exclusively oriented ARM on smartphones and tablets.

At the Google I / O 2011, a reboot was held to launch the second generation of Google TV integrating the Play Store. Now based on Android 3.1 and ARM processors, the interface has been completely redesigned and partners are multiplied: LG, Vizio, Hisense and still Sony. In addition, Japanese is the first to have taken the plunge and propose its box  NSZ-GS7 Europe. Unfortunately the record is far from convincing, the fault system is still too young, consisting of some applications and multimedia support very light. A proof of this failure: the French company Archos prefers to use an interface pad for his TV Connect.

At CES 2013, we got to the third generation of Google TV. Changes are much less numerous, but the companies believe with headlining LG will leave the United States no less than seven televisions. Other partners are added, including Asus, Netgear or TCL. Among the new software, there is a new launcher, an impressive voice recognition  that allows you to search a video, open an application, display a string or even be able to answer queries such as "film taking place in Las Vegas with burglary casinos." TV & Movies The application is now renamed PrimeTime and improves comfort for access to content. Finally the YouTube app has been updated and can play a video from his or her smartphone tablet, as does the Nexus Q (for the few owners of the unit).

Unfortunately despite the third generation of the catalog of applications is still thin and competing operating systems (Samsung Smart TV being the most important) arrive to do better. One of the causes of this failure comes from the tools available to developers. While it is very easy to use emulator for smartphones and tablets, Google TV required to have a computer with Linux KVM.

Good news because the Google TV Add-on API Level 13 comes out and finally offers extensive support for Windows, Mac OS X. Need for KVM, but only Intel hardware acceleration (also available on the Android emulator standard). If you have an AMD processor, you will unfortunately still limited to the old method. This new version includes bug fixes, but also browser based on Chrome.

You can then begin to develop your applications. Some things to consider: a Google TV is not touch screen uses a wide , has no sensors like the accelerometer and digital compass, includes neither a camera nor a GPS or Bluetooth, or a microphone.

But if you want to make an application "universal", that is to say compatible smartphones and tablets, you should place your layouts folder layout-large-NoTouch and resources in drawable-land-tvdpi (for 720p ) or drawable-land-xhdpi (for 1080p).

It remains only to let the developers take ownership of the platform and give the necessary elements for its success.

Samsung Galaxy S4: Characteristics and a wireless charging?

The S4 Galaxy should disclose in a few weeks at the Mobile World Congress 2013. The first features the Smartphone would have appeared on the Web. Samsung will also have to provide a system of wireless charging.

Galaxy S4 will be the successor to the Galaxy S3 has returned a success since its release in May. Samsung is going to try to do better by offering a Smartphone to the expectations of consumers. All eyes are turned to the new Korean mobile. SamMobile , which is always very knowledgeable about the products, Samsung has once again struck in discovering possible features of the Galaxy S4. The terminal would have made an appearance on a site benchmarks. Some information has been collected by the site. The smartphone is expected to enter the phone market in the first half of 2013. It would have Exynos processor clocked at 1.8 GHz 5 with 8 cores and 2 GB of RAM.

A Wireless Charging System

Galaxy S4 propose a Super AMOLED 4.99 inch Full HD with a density of 440ppi. Operate the terminal with Android 4.2 (Jelly Bean). Samsung could offer a 13 megapixel sensor capable of performing full HD video in 1080p 30FPS. A 2 megapixel front camera could offer HD video in 720p.

Along with this information, Samsung would have the opportunity to propose a wireless charging system for S4 Galaxy. This is not the same site that reveals the information, but the Korean site DDaily. Customers would get this feature through an option. The terminal may be provided with a cover and a special charging station specific. The website does not give more information about the technology. Samsung would have thought to choose a technique of inductive coupling resonance. You could recharge your smartphone without touch up to 2 meters. This information is rumors since the Korean did not confirm the presence or characteristics of the system load. We must wait the Mobile World Congress to learn a little more about what Galaxy S4.

Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 soon

Samsung, as we know, has a catalog very complete and varied. The manufacturer clearly trying to be present on all fronts and has thus learn through Sam Mobile that it could soon raise the veil on a new range of touch tablets: the Galaxy Tab 3. A range that is apparently composed of three models since it would issue a three Galaxy Tab 7.0, Galaxy Tab 3 of 10.1 and a Galaxy Tab 3 mystery that we do not know much yet. And if you want to know more, know that talking about now!

Certainly, these next few weeks are likely to be very busy with Samsung and this is normal since the South Korean manufacturer should grant us a number of new mobile terminals among which we can mention the S4 Galaxy , the Galaxy Tab 8.0 The Galaxy Pocket Plus and a lot of other nice things. And if we believe this new rumor, then it would also be three new tablets that could land soon: Galaxy Tab 3.

As explained a little earlier, they would be broken down into three models. It would obviously matter a 7-inch slate and a 10.1-inch slate, but Samsung could also grant us a third tablet that also benefit a 10.1 inch screen. Bizarre, obviously. If Samsung has never been afraid to overload the market, the manufacturer did not used to launch two identical terminals in a single line. Would it be a new Nexus 10? Possible, but it will take to get to the bottom.

Finally, we can also add that the new Galaxy Tab 3 should be divided into several models varying according to their storage capacity (16 GB or 32 GB) and their connectivity (3G or not), all for an arrival on the market the first quarter of 2013.

Mozilla Firefox smartphone OS for developers

Mozilla has unveiled its smartphone development for programmers working on future mobile operating system OS Firefox. It is actually two models, Keon and Peak, whose performance and specifications are somewhat different.

A small smartphone stamped Mozilla Firefox, admit that it would have no mouth? I am certain that many geeks are ready to store their current racing machine to have the pleasure to wear such an object.

If you are a developer, however, it may be possible thing. Mozilla has unveiled its smartphone development for programmers working on future mobile operating system OS Firefox. It is actually two models, Keon and Peak, whose performance and specifications are somewhat different.

The Keon is a smartphone with a corresponding "entry level" if one refers to the current standard, ie a device with a touch screen 3.5-inch HVGA screen, a 3 megapixel camera sensor, with a 1GHz Snapdragon S1, 500MB of RAM, 4GB of storage, WiFi and 3G/3G connection.

Peak meanwhile boasts a 4.3-inch qHD display, an 8 megapixel camera sensor avc one plus one 2-megapixel front, and a 1.2GHz dual-core Snapdragon S4.

Although these two devices do not revolutionize the market (this is not the goal), they recognize something very attractive in their livery borrowed bright red fox, and could quickly become a must-have for collectors. Maybe he will suffer the same fate as some concept cars to show, which became production cars under the pressure of public demand.

Goophone the i5 available for sale in China

Before the release of the iPhone 5, a Chinese manufacturer GooPhoone presented its GooPhone i5, which incorporated the appearance of the Apple device. At the time, the design of the Apple device was known GooPhone and filed a patent on the shape of the phone. But since most new, until now! GooPhone the i5 is finally available in his country of origin: China.

The Android smartphone comes out with a few months delay. Google did not actually enjoyed using HoneyComb on the back of the phone and the manufacturer had to change somewhat. In any case, its shape similar to that of the iPhone is the only phone business asset, which does not really enticing features.

Goophone the i5 has a 4-inch qHD screen with a definition of 540x960 pixels. It is equipped with a dual-core processor MAT6577 ARMv7 1 GHz and a GB of RAM. Besides this, the camera has a Goophone 8 megapixel and 16 or 32 GB of storage. Note the presence of a port Lightning, but this time pin 8.

A smartphone collector, certainly.

The Qii flexible keyboard rolls up like a sheet of paper

Keyboards have come a long way from the plastic dust traps of yesteryear. In just the past few months, we've seen virtual keyboards that project onto any surface and gloves that let users "type" in thin air. Now a handful of inventors have created the Qii, a thin, flexible keyboard that connects wirelessly to smart devices and rolls up into a portable case that fits in your pocket.

There have been a few keyboards that could be rolled up in the past, but these still only shrunk to the size of a magazine, which is still a bit bulky. When it's stored away, the Qii (pronounced key) is about as big as a roll of coins, but can be pulled out easily like a tape measure and laid over almost any surface to type on.

With a corresponding app, the keyboard connects to supported smart devices over Bluetooth. The full QWERTY keyboard also has a textured surface for easier touch typing and an anti-fingerprint coating that can be washed with just soap and water. To top it all off, the case itself is a touchpad that lets users scroll through and select items onscreen.

Over a period of several years, the team behind the bendable keyboard developed a technique for printing programmable touch sensors onto a new carbon-based nanomaterial that can conduct electricity. The result was a transparent film that can be programmed to detect the force and position of a finger touching it. Surprisingly, the flexibility of this film also enhances the keyboard's resilience. Since all the electronic components are printed flat and made of water and dirt resistant materials, the keyboard can survive drink spills and even being hit with a hammer.

There are plenty of possibilities for an ultra-thin wireless touch sensor, and the designers hope this will be the first of many products to use the technology. The Qii's electronics are built into a bendable plastic for now, but with future development, similar electronic components could be printed on a smaller scale and onto almost any material, even paper. And since it's completely programmable, different apps could yield wildly different uses for the material aside from a QWERTY keyboard.

The makers of the Qii are currently running an Indiegogo campaign to finalize the product and bring it to full production, but there's still plenty of testing and design work left to finish, particularly with getting all the components to fit inside the case properly. As of this writing, there's less than 30 days left for it to reach its US$1,850,000 goal with just over $9,000 in contributions, which doesn't seem like a good sign unfortunately.

You can still reserve your own Qii in a variety of colors for donations starting at US$120 however, with delivery expected for October 2013, provided the Indiegogo campaign reaches it's target. Certain contributors who donate a significant amount will also have the chance to work with the team to program the material with their own custom functions.

Will a colorful iPhone 5S arrive in June?

Apple's 2012 releases have come and gone. The company won't likely announce anything new for months. Analysts and Apple fans have to stay entertained somehow, however, and one of their favorite hobbies is spinning the old rumor mill. If the latest bold prediction holds any weight, you may spend next June staring at your gorgeous blue iPhone 5S.

The soothsaying comes from Jefferies analyst Peter Misek. He thinks Apple will release the iPhone 5's sequel quicker than expected. The alleged features? A "super HD" camera and screen, better battery life, and NFC (near field communication). He also lists "possible" updates as an IGZO display, a 128 GB storage option, and a variety of colors.

Does it hold water?

We wouldn't put a lot of weight in this. Investment analysts occasionally have inside information (supply chain sources, etc.), but their predictions are more often pure speculation. This sounds more like the latter, but there are reasons to give it a second glance.

Something is shifting in Apple's release schedules. Most of its product line was updated in the last few months, so it could be shifting to twice-a-year release schedules. This also isn't the first time we've heard of a new iPhone in the first half of 2013.

Red flags

The biggest red flag is the remark about the "super HD" display. The iPhone 5's display is already one of the best. If Apple upped the resolution, it would likely be in an even multiple (for software simplicity). Doubling it to 2272 x 1280 would be overkill. It wouldn't add much to the user experience, and it would kill battery life.

Colors sound fishy too. The iPod touch is often sold to young children and teenagers, where a variety of pastels makes sense. Apple likes black and white for the "grown up" devices: the iPod Classic was always white or black, the iPad has always been white or black, and the iPhone will probably stay that way too.

NFC is a bit more likely. Passbook hasn't exactly taken off, and NFC could put it on steroids. An upgraded camera is also logical. As smartphones become more customers' primary photography tools, any advancements can enhance their experience.

Grains of salt
Take it for what you will, but we'd file this one under "Interesting But Doubtful." Either way, you can expect to hear many more bold Apple predictions during the next few months. If nothing else, it's great entertainment.

HP targets enterprise users with EliteBook Revolve convertible tablet

With the success of the iPad, it’s easy to forget that convertible units with a rotating hinge and physical keyboard were once the form factor of choice for tablet computers. While touchscreen-only devices now dominate the consumer space, convertible tablets continue to find a market, particularly amongst business and government users. It is these markets that HP is targeting with its latest touch-enabled convertible tablet, the EliteBook Revolve, which is due for a March, 2013 release.

Powered by third-generation Intel Core processors and with 4 Gb of RAM, the EliteBook Revolve features a touch-enabled, 11.6-inch, 1,366 x 768 pixel resolution display that pivots and twists to switch between traditional laptop and tablet form factors. The display is made from scratch-resistant Gorilla Glass 2, while the all-magnesium chassis helps keep the unit’s weight down around 3.04 lb (1.37 kg) – that figure is based on the preproduction model, as is the estimated 22.4 mm thickness of the device.

The full-sized physical QWERTY keyboard features a backlight and is spill-resistant, while the screen orientation and brightness will adjust according to the unit’s position. Connectivity features include optional WWAN (LTE in the U.S. and HSPA+ elsewhere), secure NFC, Bluetooth, Ethernet port, two USB 3.0 ports and a DisplayPort.

Onboard storage comes in the form of a 256 GB SSD, with a 720p HD4 camera positioned above the display, a dual-microphone array, DTS Studio Sound and CyberLink’s YouCam software also on board. An optional pen is also available for touchscreen input. The battery should be good for eight to ten hours of use, and 210 hours of standby.

Although it has been optimized for Windows 8, HP will offer the option of preloading the EliteBook Revolve with Windows 7 for those not yet prepared to jump on the Metro train.

The EliteBook Revolve is that latest bid by HP to grab a slice of the growing enterprise tablet market. In October it announced the business-oriented ElitePad 900 boasting a rugged form factor and compatibility with Smart Jacket peripherals. The company has also announced a new Multi-Tablet Charging Module that can store and charge up to 10 tablet PCs with screen sizes under 10.1 inches from a single power outlet.

Like the ElitePad 900, the Multi-Tablet Charging Module will be available in the U.S. in January. It will be priced at US$499. Pricing of the EliteBook Revolve will be announced closer to its March, 2013 release date.
